Neotermes rainbowi is a significant pest belonging to the family Kalotermitidae within the order Blattodea. Unlike many soil-dwelling termite species, this specific termite is highly adapted to living within the wood of living trees, making it a critical threat to palm plantations and fruit-bearing tree species in its native range.

Host plants primarily include various species of palm trees, most notably the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera). The pest is prevalent in the tropical regions of the Pacific, where it thrives by consuming both heartwood and sapwood, effectively compromising the plant's vascular system and overall structural integrity from the inside out.

The biology of Neotermes rainbowi is characterized by the absence of a soil-nesting stage. The entire colony resides within the host tree, deriving sufficient moisture and nutrients from the plant tissue. Their lifecycle encompasses distinct castes, including nymphs, soldiers, and reproductives, which maintain the colony's growth without ever leaving the protected gallery system until the winged dispersal phase.

The severity of damage is often underestimated until physical symptoms appear, such as the collapse of the stem or the presence of frass (excrement) ejected from holes in the trunk. Because these termites feed on the internal core, the tree may show external signs of stress, such as yellowing leaves or stunted fruit growth, which are often mistaken for nutrient deficiencies or diseases.

Control strategies for this pest require an integrated approach. Early detection is paramount and involves checking trees for small exit holes or piles of fecal pellets. Management techniques include:

• Regular inspection of the trunk and crown for pest activity.
• Surgical excision of infested wood if localized.
• Application of targeted systemic insecticides into the galleries to kill the colony.
• Removal and destruction of heavily infested trees to prevent the dispersal of alates to new hosts.
