Unlike subterranean termites, this species does not require a soil connection to survive. Its ability to infest healthy or slightly stressed wood makes it a notable threat in tropical and subtropical orchard management, where it can compromise the longevity and yield of fruit-producing stands.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins with the dispersal flight of alates, which locate suitable host wood to establish new colonies. Once a pair enters the wood, they seal the entry hole and begin forming a gallery system.
