Description

The Reindeer warble fly (Oedemagena tarandi) is an obligatory parasite of reindeer, belonging to the order Diptera and the family Oestridae. This insect is specifically adapted to the arctic and subarctic regions, where it represents a significant biological factor influencing the health of reindeer herds.

While this insect does not affect crops, it is a major veterinary challenge in reindeer husbandry. The parasitism of Oedemagena tarandi has a substantial economic impact, reducing the productivity of reindeer herds and affecting the quality of livestock products, which directly impacts the efficiency of northern pastoral agriculture.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis. Adult females attach eggs to the hair of the reindeer during the summer flight period. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the skin and migrate into the subcutaneous tissue. There, they develop through three larval stages, eventually exiting the host to pupate in the soil before emerging as adults.

The damage is characterized by the formation of warbles (subcutaneous swellings) and fistulas on the back of the reindeer. This infestation leads to tissue inflammation and severe skin damage, rendering hides virtually useless. Furthermore, heavy infestation causes animal stress, weight loss, and secondary infections, compromising the overall welfare of the herd.

Control measures are vital for maintaining herd health and production efficiency:

  • applying approved insecticides during the peak activity of adult flies;
  • using protective measures and repellents to prevent egg-laying;
  • systematic treatment of reindeer with antiparasitic drugs in the autumn;
  • regular veterinary inspections to monitor infestation levels in the herd.
