The sheep bot fly (Oestrus ovis) is a parasitic insect belonging to the family Oestridae within the order Diptera. While not a plant pest, it is a significant veterinary concern in livestock management. This insect acts as an obligate parasite, with its larvae causing a condition known as oestrosis, primarily affecting sheep and goats globally.
The systematic classification places this fly within the family Oestridae. Its biology is uniquely adapted to a parasitic lifestyle. Unlike many other insects, the adult fly does not feed; its sole purpose is mating and finding a suitable host to deposit its larvae, ensuring the continuation of the species within the animal's respiratory passages.
The life cycle is characterized by viviparity. The female fly deposits larvae directly into the nostrils of the host while in flight. Once inside, the larvae migrate to the nasal passages and sinuses.
