Sheep bot fly

The sheep bot fly (Oestrus ovis) is a parasitic insect belonging to the family Oestridae within the order Diptera. While not a plant pest, it is a significant veterinary concern in livestock management. This insect acts as an obligate parasite, with its larvae causing a condition known as oestrosis, primarily affecting sheep and goats globally.

The systematic classification places this fly within the family Oestridae. Its biology is uniquely adapted to a parasitic lifestyle. Unlike many other insects, the adult fly does not feed; its sole purpose is mating and finding a suitable host to deposit its larvae, ensuring the continuation of the species within the animal's respiratory passages.

The life cycle is characterized by viviparity. The female fly deposits larvae directly into the nostrils of the host while in flight. Once inside, the larvae migrate to the nasal passages and sinuses. They undergo three distinct larval stages, feeding on the host's nasal secretions and mucus, which causes significant discomfort and localized tissue irritation.

The clinical impact of an infestation is severe. Affected animals exhibit constant sneezing, nasal discharge, head shaking, and difficulty breathing. This causes stress, reduced grazing time, and weight loss. In severe cases, the damage to the nasal mucosa can lead to secondary bacterial infections and, if untreated, high morbidity rates in a flock.

Effective control and prevention strategies are essential for animal welfare:

• Systematic administration of anthelmintics or macrocyclic lactones during and after the fly season.
• Utilizing appropriate housing management to minimize fly exposure during peak activity.
