Pales weevil

Systematic position. The Pales weevil (Pachylobius picivorus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests of coniferous forests, particularly within North American and European forest ecosystems, causing significant challenges for nursery managers and foresters.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this insect include a wide range of conifers. Species such as pine (Pinus spp.), spruce (Picea spp.), and larch (Larix spp.) are frequently targeted. The insect shows a strong preference for seedlings and saplings growing in or near areas where timber has recently been harvested.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Adults are attracted to the volatile substances emitted by stressed, injured, or freshly cut coniferous trees. Larvae typically develop under the bark of stumps and roots of weakened or harvested trees, where they feed on the inner bark and phloem, completing their development in the soil or wood tissue.

Character of damage and impact. Adult weevils are the main stage causing damage to young plantings. They feed on the tender bark of stems and branches, often girdling the young trees. This feeding behavior disrupts nutrient transport, leading to yellowing, wilting, and eventually the death of the saplings. In high-density populations, the Pales weevil can lead to total crop failure in newly established plantations.

Control measures. Effective management of the Pales weevil relies on a combination of silvicultural practices and chemical treatments:

• Stump removal to eliminate breeding sites for the larvae.
• Strategic delay in replanting areas for 1–2 years after harvest to avoid peak adult populations.
• Use of insecticide-treated seedlings during the planting phase to prevent adult feeding.
• Deployment of pitfall traps and fresh pine logs to monitor and reduce adult weevil numbers in affected areas.
