Paralongidorus
Paralongidorus
Description
Paralongidorus is a genus of ectoparasitic nematodes belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. These microscopic worms are obligate plant parasites that feed on the contents of root cells, causing significant pathological changes in the root system and suppressing the overall growth and development of the host plant.
The pest attacks a wide range of agricultural crops. Vegetables, berry crops, fruit trees, ornamental plants, and cereals are frequently affected by Paralongidorus. The nematode poses a particular threat to crops grown in sandy and light-textured soils, as these conditions provide the ideal environment for the nematode to move freely and reach plant roots efficiently.
The biology and life cycle of the nematode involve several larval stages and an adult form. Throughout their life, these nematodes remain in the soil, feeding on root tips using a specialized organ known as a long stylet. Reproduction rates and development speed are directly correlated with soil temperature and moisture levels; optimal conditions lead to rapid population growth within the root zone.
Damage symptoms typically include the formation of galls, root deformities, swelling, and necrosis at the root tips. Due to mechanical injury and the injection of salivary enzymes during feeding, the plant loses its ability to absorb water and nutrients effectively. Externally, infested plants show signs of stunted growth, chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield capacity.
Control measures require a multi-faceted approach, as managing soil-borne nematodes is inherently difficult. Key strategies include practicing crop rotation with antagonist plants, ensuring the use of certified, clean planting material, and applying professional nematicides when pest populations exceed economic injury levels. Improving soil health and maintaining robust agricultural practices are essential for strengthening plant resilience against infestation.
