These microscopic phytonematodes function as ectoparasites, inhabiting the rhizosphere and utilizing a specialized stylet to feed on the root tissues of various host plants.
This pest has a broad host range, posing a threat to numerous essential crops including wheat, barley, sugar beets, and various horticultural vegetables. They are most prevalent in light, sandy soils, where the physical structure allows for the active movement of nematodes through the soil pores toward healthy root systems.
The life cycle of Paralongidorus maximus is relatively slow and highly dependent on environmental stability, particularly soil moisture levels. Eggs are deposited within the soil matrix, and larvae progress through several developmental stages.
