Parthenolecanium fletcheri, commonly known as the Fletcher scale, is a notorious pest that thrives on various coniferous species. Its biological strategy involves forming a protective, convex scale that serves as a shield for both the female and her eggs, providing resistance against many environmental pressures.
Host plants mainly consist of ornamental conifers. The pest shows a strong preference for members of the Cupressaceae family, including Thuja (arborvitae), Juniperus (juniper), and Chamaecyparis (false cypress), as well as Taxus (yew). Due to their habit of congregating on the undersides of branches, populations can go unnoticed for long periods until severe chlorosis and needle drop occur.
Biology and life cycle are univoltine, meaning there is only one generation per year. The insect overwinters as a second-instar nymph nestled in the bark crevices. With the onset of spring, these nymphs move to the foliage to feed actively. By early summer, adult females lay eggs under their protective shells, and subsequently, the eggs hatch into active, mobile 'crawlers' that disperse throughout the canopy to find new feeding sites.
Nature of damage is primarily due to the extraction of phloem sap, which deprives the host plant of essential nutrients. Additionally, the insects excrete large amounts of honeydew. This sticky substance serves as an ideal substrate for the growth of sooty mold, a fungus that manifests as black patches on needles. This mold reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to weakened growth and potential plant mortality.
Protection measures should be focused on disrupting the life cycle at the most vulnerable stages. Effective management strategies include:
- Monitoring for crawlers during the early summer months.
- Applying horticultural oils in early spring to smother overwintering nymphs.
- Using systemic insecticides for internal plant protection against feeding stages.
- Pruning and destroying heavily infested branches to reduce local pest pressure.
