Oregon flat mite

The Oregon flat mite (Pentamerismus oregonensis) is a small arthropod belonging to the family Tenuipalpidae, within the order Trombidiformes. Unlike the well-known spider mites, these pests are known as flat mites because they are notably dorsoventrally flattened and do not produce conspicuous silk webbing, making them difficult to identify without magnification.

These mites are specialized pests of conifers, showing a strong preference for members of the Cupressaceae family. Key host plants include various species of Thuja, Juniperus, and Chamaecyparis. They are a significant concern in nurseries, residential landscapes, and arboretums, where they can severely impact the aesthetic quality of evergreen foliage.

The life cycle of the Oregon flat mite is strongly influenced by temperature. They typically overwinter as adult females sheltered under bark scales or in the crevices of needles. As temperatures rise in the spring, the mites resume activity and begin laying eggs on the host plant. The mite completes multiple generations during a single growing season, allowing populations to surge rapidly in hot, dry conditions.

The primary damage caused by these mites is the removal of sap from foliage. This feeding activity results in chlorosis, stippling, and eventual browning of the needles. Chronic infestations cause the needles to drop prematurely, leading to sparse foliage, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the dieback of branches and twigs, making the plants more susceptible to secondary pathogens.

Effective management strategies for the Oregon flat mite include the following:

• Application of targeted acaricides or horticultural oils when infestation levels exceed economic thresholds.
