Pharyngomyia picta is a species of bot fly belonging to the family Oestridae. This insect is primarily recognized as an endoparasite of cervids, such as red deer and roe deer. In the context of game farming and agricultural management, it is classified as a significant pest because it affects animal welfare and productivity, often necessitating strict veterinary oversight.

The biology of Pharyngomyia picta is characterized by a specialized reproductive strategy. The adult fly does not feed, focusing solely on locating a suitable host. It is larviparous, meaning the female sprays live first-instar larvae directly into the nostrils of the host animal during flight. This rapid attack ensures that the larvae reach the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract efficiently.

Once inside, the larvae progress through several developmental stages within the nasal passages and pharynx. They anchor themselves to the tissue using cephalic hooks and feed on the mucus and inflammatory exudates produced by the host's body. This period of development is critical for the larvae, which are highly adapted to survive in the host's specialized environment until they are ready to pupate.

The harm caused by this pest is mainly clinical. Animals infested with these larvae suffer from chronic rhinitis and pharyngitis. Symptoms include frequent sneezing, nasal discharge, head shaking, and difficulty breathing. As a result, the animals experience stress, reduced appetite, and weight loss, which significantly impacts the economic performance of deer farming operations.
