Cypress bark beetle
Phloeosinus cristatus
Description
Systematic position: The cypress bark beetle (Phloeosinus cristatus) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a significant pest known for targeting various coniferous species, particularly those in the Cupressaceae family, causing extensive damage to urban landscapes and forest nurseries.
Host plants: This beetle primarily attacks trees within the genus Cupressus (cypress), Juniperus (juniper), Thuja (arborvitae), and Chamaecyparis (false cypress). While it shows a preference for trees weakened by drought, poor irrigation, or mechanical damage, it can also infest healthy trees when population densities reach high levels.
Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults bore into the bark to create galleries for egg-laying. The larvae then hatch and tunnel through the inner bark and cambium, feeding on the tree's vascular tissues. Depending on the climate, the beetle can complete multiple generations within a single calendar year.
Nature of damage and pest impact: Damage occurs in two ways: adult beetles feed on the bark of small twigs, causing them to wilt and break off, while larvae mine the trunk, creating extensive gallery networks. This activity disrupts the flow of nutrients and water, eventually causing the tree to lose its vitality, turn yellow, and potentially die if the infestation is severe.
Control measures: Management strategies focus on both prevention and direct control. Maintaining tree health through consistent watering and fertilization is the first line of defense. Pruning and removing infested limbs or dead trees is critical to reducing the population reservoir. During periods of peak adult activity, chemical control using systemic or contact insecticides is recommended, often combined with pheromone-based monitoring.
