Description
Systematic position. The common green leaf weevil (Phyllobius urticae) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This species is a widespread insect frequently observed in gardens, forests, and agricultural lands, known for its distinct metallic-green appearance.
Crops affected. This weevil is a generalist feeder. It affects a wide range of host plants, including various deciduous trees like birch, alder, and willow, as well as several berries such as raspberries and strawberries. It is also commonly found on nettles, which serve as an important host plant in wild habitats.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae overwinter in the soil, feeding on the root systems of various plants. In the spring, they pupate within the soil. Adult beetles emerge in late spring and early summer, when they begin to feed on foliage and proceed to mate for the next generation.
Damage and harmfulness. Adult weevils are the primary cause of damage, as they feed on leaf margins, creating irregular notched patterns. In cases of high infestation, the beetles can cause significant defoliation, which impairs the plant's ability to photosynthesize and can lead to stunted growth or a reduction in crop yield.
Control measures. Integrated pest management is recommended for controlling this weevil. Cultural practices include removing weeds like nettles from the immediate vicinity of sensitive crops to reduce breeding sites. Mechanical methods, such as shaking beetles off bushes onto a sheet, can be effective in small gardens. If necessary, targeted applications of insecticides are used during the peak emergence period.
