Phyllophaga hirtiventris

Taxonomic position. This species belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Scarabaeidae. As a member of the genus Phyllophaga, it is widely recognized for the significant agricultural and horticultural damage caused by its larval stage, commonly referred to as white grubs.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult beetles are primarily nocturnal, feeding on foliage, while the larval stage lives underground for several years, depending on environmental conditions. Larvae feed continuously, growing through several instars and consuming organic matter and plant roots.

Damage patterns. The larvae are notorious for their aggressive feeding behavior on root systems. They prune or completely sever roots, which severely compromises the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients. Infected plants show symptoms of chlorosis, stunted growth, and eventually wilting and death, especially during periods of drought.

Economic importance. This pest is a major threat to a broad spectrum of crops, including corn, potatoes, turfgrass, and fruit tree nurseries. Because they reside underground and are often undetected until significant damage is visible, infestations can lead to substantial financial losses and reduced yield quality across entire fields.

Management and control. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential to suppress populations effectively:

• Tillage practices that expose larvae to surface predation by birds and desiccation.
• Application of granular or systemic insecticides into the soil during planting to protect the root zone.
• Biological control using entomopathogenic nematodes or fungi that target soil-dwelling grubs.

• Monitoring adult beetle flight activity using light traps to time insecticide applications accurately.
