Description

The stem-boring nightshade weevil (Phyrdenus divergens) is a damaging insect belonging to the family Curculionidae (order Coleoptera). This species is specifically adapted to feed on members of the Solanaceae family, making it a significant challenge for vegetable producers in regions where this pest is established.

The host range of Phyrdenus divergens focuses primarily on economically important crops such as eggplant, potato, tomato, and peppers. While adults can feed on the foliage, causing minor cosmetic damage, the primary damage is caused by the larvae, which tunnel into the succulent stems of the host plants.

The biology of this weevil is characterized by an endophytous larval phase. The female weevil oviposits into the stems or petioles of the plant. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately burrow into the internal tissues, feeding on the pith. This internal feeding cuts off the plant's vascular system, leading to rapid decline in vigor and eventually plant death.

Infestation symptoms include localized wilting of branches, swelling or gall-like formations on the stems, and visible entry holes. Plants infected with Phyrdenus divergens often show stunted growth and poor fruit set. Secondary infections are common as the larval tunnels provide easy entry points for various bacterial and fungal pathogens.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this beetle. Growers should practice field sanitation by removing and destroying infested stems promptly. Chemical control is most effective when targeted at the adult weevils before they have the opportunity to oviposit, utilizing systematic insecticides during the early stages of the crop season.
