Description
Systematic position: The genus Postelectrotermes belongs to the order Isoptera and the family Kalotermitidae, commonly known as drywood termites. Unlike subterranean termites, these insects do not require contact with the soil to obtain moisture, enabling them to infest wood structures and trees located far from ground sources.
Host plants: This genus primarily affects various woody plants, including orchard fruit trees and ornamental trees. They prefer trees that are already weakened by disease, stress, or existing structural damage. Furthermore, these termites pose a constant threat to timber, wooden farming structures, and structural wood components of agricultural buildings.
Biology and life cycle: Postelectrotermes species undergo incomplete metamorphosis. Their colonies are typically small and grow slowly. The life cycle involves a reproductive caste (alates) that leaves the parent colony to swarm and mate. Once established, they create nests deep within the wood, which serves as both their food source and their permanent habitat.
Nature of damage and economic importance: These pests consume the internal part of the wood, excavating complex gallery systems. This leads to internal decay that is often invisible from the outside until structural failure occurs. In agricultural settings, this results in reduced tree vitality, premature fruit drop, and in extreme cases, the total loss of the tree or infrastructure.
Control measures:
- Regular inspections for signs of frass (termite droppings) and entrance holes.
- Sanitary pruning and removal of infested woody debris from the farm.
- Application of specialized wood preservatives or insecticides to entry points.
- Maintaining tree vigor through proper fertilization and irrigation to prevent infestation.
- Installing pheromone-based monitoring stations to detect swarm activity.
