Procladius is a genus of midge belonging to the family Chironomidae, order Diptera. These non-biting midges are widely distributed in freshwater ecosystems, where their larvae thrive in benthic sediments. The primary agricultural significance of Procladius lies in its impact on rice cultivation during the early growth stages. While these larvae are primarily predatory, they can cause significant damage to young rice seedlings. When populations reach high densities, the larvae mechanically damage roots and stems while foraging, leading to reduced plant stands.
