It is a microscopic, plant-parasitic worm that primarily inhabits the rhizosphere of plants and the soil profile, where it feeds on plant cell fluids using a specialized feeding apparatus known as a stylet.

Host crops. This nematode species acts as a polyphage, posing a threat to a wide range of agricultural commodities. It is frequently observed in cereal crops, various vegetables, potatoes, as well as a diverse array of ornamental plants and grasses grown in both protected greenhouse conditions and open fields.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Psilenchus hilarulus is intricately linked to the status of the plant root system and soil moisture levels. The nematode progresses through several larval stages, each culminating in a molt. Reproduction typically occurs within the soil environment or directly inside root tissues, with optimal conditions for development found in temperate climates and moist soil profiles.

Type of damage and impact. The harmful impact of this nematode involves the disruption of essential plant physiological processes, such as nutrient uptake and water transport. By piercing root cells, the parasite induces necrotic lesions, suppresses root growth, and causes overall plant stunting. These physical wounds often serve as entry points for secondary fungal or bacterial pathogens, leading to premature wilting and yield loss.

Protection measures. Managing this pest requires an integrated management strategy:
