Description

Tylodorus acuminatus is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Rhabditida and the family Tylodoridae. As a migratory ectoparasite, it dwells primarily in the rhizosphere, seeking out the roots of host plants to feed, thereby posing a threat to both natural vegetation and commercial agricultural crops.

The host range of this nematode includes a variety of woody plants, shrubs, and certain perennial herbaceous species. These nematodes are particularly prevalent in undisturbed soil environments, such as forest borders and nurseries, where they can survive in the soil profile for extended periods awaiting suitable root exudates.

The life cycle of Tylodorus acuminatus progresses through an egg stage, four larval molts, and adulthood. Using a specialized feeding apparatus known as a stylet, the nematode penetrates root cells to ingest cytoplasmic contents. This feeding behavior is continuous throughout the active stages of the nematode's life.

The economic impact of this pest manifests as stunted plant growth, chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield.
