Description
The genus Tylenchus belongs to the order Tylenchida and the family Tylenchidae. These microscopic phyto-parasitic worms are widely distributed in soils across the globe. As plant-parasitic nematodes, they have adapted to feed on the root systems and aerial parts of various agricultural crops, representing a persistent challenge in global plant pathology.
The host range for these nematodes is vast and varied. Tylenchus species attack cereals, vegetables, legumes, berry bushes, and numerous ornamental flowering plants. By feeding on the content of parenchymal cells in roots or stems, they disrupt the physiological processes of the host plant, resulting in stunted development throughout the entire vegetation cycle.
Their biology and life cycle consist of several distinct stages: egg, four larval stages, and the adult form. Infestation typically occurs through soil moisture, where nematodes exhibit active movement toward plant tissues. Under unfavorable environmental conditions, Tylenchus species can enter a state of dormancy (anabiosis), maintaining viability within dry soil or crop residues for extended periods.
The economic damage caused by these pests includes hindered plant growth, leaf chlorosis, stem deformation, and significant yield reductions. Damaged plant tissues are highly susceptible to secondary infections caused by fungi and bacteria. High levels of nematode infestation often lead to uneven crop emergence and poor overall quality of the agricultural product.
Effective management requires rigorous phytosanitary inspection of planting material and the use of certified healthy seeds. Essential agricultural practices include proper crop rotation, deep plowing to disrupt nematode populations, the elimination of weeds that serve as reservoirs, and the application of organic soil amendments. In greenhouse conditions, soil fumigation and thermal treatment of substrates are considered primary control methods.
