Description
Tylodorus is a genus of microscopic parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Tylodoridae. These plant-parasitic organisms live hidden within the soil profile and feed on the cellular contents of plant roots, often making them extremely difficult to detect until significant damage has already occurred.
This pest affects a diverse range of agricultural and ornamental crops. Nematodes of the genus Tylodorus primarily target root hairs and the delicate tissues of developing roots, which severely impairs the plant's ability to uptake water and essential mineral nutrients from the soil environment, leading to physiological stress.
The biology and lifecycle of Tylodorus are consistent with many soil-borne nematodes. They undergo several larval stages, developing either within the rhizosphere or directly inside host root tissues. Favorable conditions for their proliferation include high soil moisture and moderate temperatures, which allow the pest to rapidly increase its population density.
Damage symptoms typically manifest as stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and premature wilting of the canopy. Below ground, the root system frequently shows necrotic lesions, distortion, and reduced biomass.
