Cuckoo bumblebees

Psithyrus

Description

The genus Psithyrus, currently classified within the genus Bombus, belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Apidae. These insects are obligate social parasites, lacking a worker caste. Evolutionarily, they have adapted to infiltrate the nests of other bumblebee species, relying entirely on the host colony to provide labor and resources for their offspring.

From an agronomical perspective, Psithyrus are not pests of crops in the traditional sense, as they do not consume leaves or fruits. However, they are classified as biological "pests" within the context of commercial pollination services. By parasitizing colonies of active bumblebees, they effectively reduce the number of functional foragers available for the cross-pollination of crops.

The life cycle of the cuckoo bumblebee begins when a fertilized female hibernates through the winter. In spring, she searches for a host colony. Once inside, she either kills the queen or suppresses her reproductive ability through chemical mimicry and physical dominance. Consequently, the host workers are redirected to nurture the parasitic brood instead of their own.

The economic harm caused by these insects is indirect but measurable. In intensive agriculture and greenhouse operations where bumblebees are introduced as primary pollinators, the presence of Psithyrus can significantly degrade the quality of pollination. A weakened host colony will result in fewer flower visits, lower fruit set percentages, and overall reduced crop yields.

Management strategies are primarily defensive rather than eradicative. Because cuckoo bumblebees are part of the natural ecosystem, control is focused on protecting managed colonies:

  • Ensuring proper screening of greenhouse structures to prevent wild parasitic entry.
  • Monitoring incoming bumblebee boxes for signs of nest infiltration.
  • Utilizing closed-loop breeding programs to maintain the genetic purity and health of commercial pollinators.
