Description

The red palm mite (Raoiella indica) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Tenuipalpidae family of the order Trombidiformes. It is recognized as one of the most destructive invasive pests of palm trees worldwide, capable of causing widespread damage to both commercial and ornamental species.

The primary host range of this mite includes coconut palms, date palms, and a variety of ornamental palm species. Additionally, it can infest banana plants and members of the Zingiberaceae family, which broadens its economic impact across various agricultural sectors and home gardening landscapes.

Regarding its biology, the red palm mite follows a rapid developmental cycle. Females deposit eggs in clusters, primarily on the underside of leaves near the midrib. Due to the favorable conditions of tropical climates, multiple generations can occur per year, leading to massive outbreaks if left uncontrolled.

The damage caused by these mites results from the extraction of plant cell contents. This leads to chlorosis, necrosis, and premature yellowing of leaves. Severe infestations can cause leaf drop and stunt the development of palms, often leading to reduced fruit production in agricultural settings and severe loss of ornamental value.
