Red palm mite

The red palm mite (Raoiella indica) is a devastating plant-feeding mite belonging to the Tenuipalpidae family in the order Trombidiformes. Originating in Southeast Asia, this species has become a global concern, infesting plantations and decorative landscapes across many tropical and subtropical regions. It is recognized as one of the most significant pests for palm and banana industries.

Its primary host plants include various species of palms, such as coconut and date palms, as well as banana plants and heliconias. The mite is highly adaptable, allowing it to thrive in diverse climatic conditions. Its ability to colonize host plants rapidly makes it a constant threat to biodiversity and agricultural productivity in affected areas.

The biology of Raoiella indica is defined by a short lifecycle that progresses from egg to larva, followed by protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. These mites congregate primarily on the underside of leaves, using their stylets to pierce plant tissue and consume cell sap. High reproduction rates enable populations to double quickly during periods of optimal temperature and humidity.

Damage symptoms manifest as chlorotic spots that eventually turn yellow or necrotic. As the mite population increases, the leaf surface becomes covered in cast skins and excrement, which inhibits gas exchange and photosynthesis. Severely infested plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced fruit production, and, if left unchecked, may experience significant canopy loss or death.

Effective management requires a combination of strict phytosanitary regulations to stop the movement of infested plant material and diligent field monitoring. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies include cultural practices like pruning and destroying infested fronds. When necessary, the application of targeted acaricides is utilized; however, rotation of chemistry is critical to prevent resistance development in the mite population.
