Description

Systematic position. The thistle head weevil (Rhinocyllus conicus) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is a highly specialized insect species, widely recognized in agricultural science for its role in the biological suppression of various thistle species, particularly those considered as invasive weeds in pasturelands.

Host plants. The primary hosts for this weevil are plants within the Asteraceae family, most notably those in the genus Carduus and Silybum. By targeting the reproductive structures of these weeds, the weevil limits their ability to produce viable seeds, effectively curbing the spread of invasive populations in agricultural landscapes.

Biology and life cycle. This species completes one generation per year. Adult weevils overwinter in sheltered areas, such as leaf litter or dense grass. In the spring, they emerge to feed on the foliage of host plants before mating. Females deposit eggs on the bracts of developing flower buds, and the hatched larvae tunnel directly into the flower head to feed.

Nature of damage and economic impact. The larvae cause significant damage by feeding on the receptacle tissue and the developing seeds within the thistle flower head. This destruction drastically reduces the plant's fecundity. Under favorable conditions, a high density of larvae can prevent an entire population of host weeds from reproducing successfully.

  • Implement mechanical control by removing flower heads before adult emergence.
  • Use selective insecticides only if necessary to protect sensitive non-target flora.

Control measures. In many regions, Rhinocyllus conicus is intentionally introduced as a bio-control agent, so chemical intervention is rarely recommended. Management strategies focus on preserving the delicate balance between the weed population and the weevil. If local suppression is needed, timely mowing of the thistle before the larvae complete their development is the most effective manual method.
