Description

The genus Rhinoestrus belongs to the family Oestridae within the order Diptera. It is important to clarify that this organism is not a pest of agricultural crops, but rather a significant veterinary parasite that affects the nasal passages of equids, causing a condition known as oestrosis.

These flies specifically target horses, donkeys, and zebras as their primary hosts. Adult Rhinoestrus do not feed, as they lack functional mouthparts, which means their sole biological objective after maturation is to reproduce and find a suitable host for their larvae.

The life cycle is unique because the female fly is larviparous. While in flight, she deposits small larvae directly into the nostrils of the host. These larvae crawl into the nasal cavity, attach themselves to the mucosal membrane, and develop by feeding on the inflammatory secretions of the host.

The damage caused by these larvae leads to irritation, inflammation, and chronic rhinitis. Symptoms in infested animals include frequent sneezing, nasal discharge, head tossing, and in severe cases, the larvae may migrate to the frontal sinuses, causing respiratory distress and neurological pain.

Management and control strategies involve the administration of systemic anthelmintic treatments, particularly macrocyclic lactones, which are effective in eliminating larvae. Farm management practices, such as providing sheltered housing during peak fly activity and maintaining clean environments, are essential for reducing the risk of infestation.
