Systematic position. The red-legged jumping weevil (Rhynchaenus sanguinipes) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These insects are well-known for their specialized hind legs, which enable them to perform powerful jumps, a primary defense mechanism that complicates manual control and scouting during the growing season.

Host crops and impact. This pest primarily targets Rosaceae species, including apple and pear trees, as well as specific willow and poplar varieties. The economic impact is caused by both adults, which feed on leaves causing characteristic shot-hole damage, and larvae, which mine the leaf tissue. High infestation levels lead to reduced foliage area, impaired photosynthesis, and premature leaf drop, weakening the tree's vigor.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of host plants. Adults overwinter in leaf litter, under bark crevices, or in the upper soil layers. Upon emergence in spring, they feed on budding leaves and flowers. Females deposit eggs into the leaf tissue, where larvae subsequently hatch and develop, creating internal mines that protect them from external environmental pressures until pupation.

Damage patterns. Damage typically manifests as tiny, pinpoint holes in the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these holes can merge, leading to necrotic spots and yellowing of the leaf surface. In severe outbreaks, the cumulative effect of mining and adult feeding significantly reduces the canopy's photosynthetic capacity, which directly influences yield quality, fruit size, and the tree's overall ability to overwinter successfully.

Management strategies. Effective control requires an integrated approach. Sanitation is crucial; removing and composting or burning fallen leaves helps reduce the overwintering population. In commercial orchards, if pest density exceeds economic thresholds, targeted applications of systemic or contact insecticides are recommended. Growers should ensure application timing aligns with the pest's life cycle stages and adhere to safety regulations regarding beneficial insects like bees.
