Elm bark beetle

Systematic position. The elm bark beetle (Scolytus ensifer) belongs to the order Coleoptera, family Curculionidae, and subfamily Scolytinae. It is a specialized wood-boring insect that occupies the subcortical niche of host trees, playing a significant role in the degradation of elm populations.

Host plants. The species exclusively attacks various elm species (genus Ulmus). While it shows a preference for stressed, weakened, or dying trees, large populations can attack healthy trees, particularly when favorable breeding conditions are met.

Biology and life cycle. Typically, the species completes one generation per year, although warmer climates may support a partial second generation. Adults emerge in the spring to locate host trees. Females bore gallery systems beneath the bark to lay eggs, and the resulting larvae feed radially, creating distinct feeding tunnels that disrupt the cambium layer.

Character of damage and economic significance. Larval feeding damages the tree's vascular system, hindering the translocation of nutrients and water. This leads to foliage yellowing, branch dieback, and eventual tree mortality. Furthermore, Scolytus ensifer is a primary vector for the fungal pathogen causing Dutch elm disease, making it a critical threat to urban and forest landscapes alike.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling this pest. Key practices include:

• Sanitary logging to remove and dispose of infested wood before the emergence of new adult beetles.
• Destruction of slash and log piles that could serve as breeding grounds.
• Utilization of trap trees or pheromone lures to monitor and reduce local beetle density.
• Application of prophylactic insecticides on high-value ornamental elms during the flight period.
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper watering and soil management to reduce susceptibility to colonization.
