Description
The lesser elm bark beetle (Scolytus minor) is a beetle belonging to the subfamily Scolytinae within the family Curculionidae. It is a wood-boring insect that targets weakened trees, playing a significant role in the degradation of elm populations and impacting other hardwood species.
This pest primarily infests trees of the genus Ulmus (elm). However, it is also known to colonize various fruit-bearing trees, such as apple, pear, and plum, especially in orchards located near infested woodland areas. Its ability to adapt to different hosts makes it a persistent threat in diverse ecosystems.
The biology of Scolytus minor involves a distinct life cycle beneath the bark. After mating, the female excavates a gallery where she lays eggs. Upon hatching, the larvae construct their own feeding tunnels perpendicular to the main gallery. This feeding behavior destroys the phloem and cambium layers, essentially girdling the tree and cutting off nutrient transport.
The damage caused by the lesser elm bark beetle is twofold: direct mechanical damage from the larvae and the transmission of fungal pathogens. As the beetles move from tree to tree, they can spread spores of Ophiostoma fungi, which are the primary agents of Dutch elm disease, leading to rapid systemic failure of the host plant.
Controlling this beetle requires a rigorous integrated pest management strategy:
- frequent inspection and prompt removal of infested or dying wood;
- application of appropriate insecticides during the beetle's peak flight season;
- maintaining high tree vigor through irrigation and proper fertilization;
- using pheromone traps for monitoring and reducing population densities in critical areas.
