Banded elm bark beetle

Systematic position: The banded elm bark beetle (Scolytus schevyrewi) is a member of the Coleoptera order, Curculionidae family, and Scolytinae subfamily. It is a highly aggressive bark beetle species, originally native to Asia, which has become a significant invasive pest in many parts of the world, particularly affecting urban forestry.

Host plants: The primary hosts are elm trees (Ulmus spp.). However, the pest shows broad host range flexibility, also infesting poplars, willows, fruit trees like apple and apricot, and in some cases, coniferous species, especially when the host trees are experiencing environmental stress or drought.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Scolytus schevyrewi involves egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Overwintering occurs as mature larvae beneath the bark. In early spring, they pupate and transform into adults. The adults emerge through small holes in the bark. Depending on local temperature conditions, the insect can complete one to three generations per year.

Damage and severity: Infestation starts when female beetles bore through the bark to create egg galleries. Larvae then tunnel through the phloem and cambium, effectively girdling the tree and cutting off nutrient transport. This leads to canopy thinning, branch dieback, and rapid mortality. Furthermore, these beetles act as vectors for fungal pathogens that cause severe vascular diseases in trees.

Protection measures: Management of the banded elm bark beetle focuses on prevention and sanitation. Key practices include:

• Regular inspection of elms for signs of infestation;
• Prompt removal and destruction of infested wood to reduce population density;
• Application of systemic insecticides for high-value ornamental trees;
• Monitoring with pheromone lures;
• Maintaining tree vigor through proper irrigation and fertilization.
