This species is widely recognized as a significant threat to various legume crops, with a particular affinity for cultivated alfalfa fields, where it can drastically reduce fodder quality and quantity.

The pest targets primarily perennial legumes, most notably alfalfa. The damage is caused by both adults, which feed on the foliage, and larvae, which reside in the soil. This dual-threat behavior allows the insect to affect the plant's physiological processes at different developmental stages.

The biology of Sitona inops involves a life cycle linked to seasonal temperatures. Adults overwinter in soil debris or protected areas and emerge in early spring to feed. Females deposit eggs near the base of host plants. Upon hatching, larvae burrow into the soil to feed on the plant's root system, specifically targeting the nitrogen-fixing nodules.

Damage symptoms include the characteristic "notching" of leaves caused by adult beetles, which gives leaf edges a scalloped appearance.
