Description
Systematic position. Spondyliaspis is a genus of insects within the family Psyllidae, order Hemiptera. These small, sap-sucking insects are highly specialized, feeding primarily on the foliage of trees in the Myrtaceae family, most notably the Eucalyptus genus.
Affected crops. The primary hosts for these pests are various species of eucalyptus. While they are native to certain regions, they have become invasive pests in many parts of the world where eucalyptus is planted for timber, oil production, or ornamental purposes, causing significant ecological and economic impact.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. The most distinct biological characteristic is the production of a 'lerp'—a protective cover constructed by the nymph from its own honeydew and wax secretions. This structure acts as a shield against desiccation, environmental stressors, and natural predators.
Nature of damage and harmfulness. Nymphs cause damage by piercing leaf tissue and sucking sap. This feeding process deprives the tree of nutrients, leading to yellowing (chlorosis), leaf necrosis, and premature leaf drop. Severe infestations result in significant canopy thinning, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and retarded growth rates for the entire tree.
Management strategies. Effective management of Spondyliaspis involves a multifaceted approach:
