Eucalyptus lerp psyllid

The eucalyptus lerp psyllid, scientifically known as Spondyliaspis plicatuloides, is an insect belonging to the Hemiptera order and the Aphalaridae family. Originally native to Australia, it has become a significant invasive pest in various parts of the world where eucalyptus trees are cultivated for timber or ornamental purposes.

This pest exclusively targets various species of the Eucalyptus genus. By feeding on the sap of the host plant, the insect induces stress on the tree, particularly affecting the foliage of young saplings and established trees, which can lead to severe health decline under high infestation pressure.

The life cycle involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and an adult phase. The defining biological trait of this species is the construction of a 'lerp'—a protective, semi-transparent, and dome-shaped covering made of crystallized honeydew and wax. This structure serves as a shield for the developing nymph, protecting it from both adverse environmental conditions and many common predators.

Damage caused by Spondyliaspis plicatuloides is characterized by leaf chlorosis, necrosis, and premature leaf drop. The removal of nutrients from the foliage impacts the tree's photosynthetic ability, resulting in stunted growth. Heavy infestations can cause crown dieback, weakening the tree's resistance to secondary pathogens and other wood-boring insects.

Control measures primarily emphasize biological methods. The introduction and management of specific natural enemies, such as the parasitoid wasp Psyllaephagus bliteus, have shown the most promise in regulating population numbers in affected regions. Cultural practices, such as ensuring tree health and avoiding excessive nitrogen fertilization, can also help mitigate the impact of the pest.
