Yellow-headed moth

The yellow-headed moth (Spuleria flavicaput) is a lepidopteran insect belonging to the family Agonoxenidae. Although it is a relatively small species, it is recognized as a specific pest in orchards and woodland areas, primarily affecting woody plants in temperate regions of Europe.

The insect typically targets trees from the Rosaceae family. The primary hosts include hawthorn and apple trees. The larvae are the stage responsible for the damage, as they rely on the host plant's tissues for growth and development, specifically focusing on the buds and tender young sprouts during early spring.

The life cycle of Spuleria flavicaput is synchronized with the phenology of its host plants. The insect overwinters in the larval or pupal stage protected in crevices of the bark or plant debris. Once temperatures rise, the larvae emerge to feed on the developing buds, completing their life cycle through pupation into adult moths which then mate and lay eggs for the next generation.

The damage caused by these insects is quite significant for young orchards. By consuming the contents of the buds, the larvae prevent the tree from developing healthy leaves, flowers, or fruit. This results in reduced yields and, in cases of severe infestation, can cause the death of younger shoots, weakening the overall structure and growth of the tree.

Integrated management strategies for controlling the yellow-headed moth include:

• Application of targeted insecticides during the green bud stage to disrupt early larval feeding.
• Sanitary pruning of infested twigs to physically remove the larvae from the canopy.
