Currant clearwing
Synanthedon tipuliformis
Description
The Currant clearwing (Synanthedon tipuliformis) is a destructive pest of currant and gooseberry bushes, belonging to the family Sesiidae within the order Lepidoptera. Its adult stage mimics a wasp, which is an effective evolutionary strategy to avoid predators while feeding and mating in the garden environment.
This moth primarily targets various species of Ribes, including black, red, and white currants. The damage is exclusively caused by the larvae, which bore into the stems of the plants. By feeding on the pith and interior tissue of the branches, the larvae disrupt the vascular system, significantly reducing the plant's vigor and yield.
The lifecycle of this pest is typically univoltine, meaning it completes one generation per year. Adult moths emerge in late spring or early summer, usually corresponding with the blooming period of host bushes. Eggs are laid near buds or bark cracks, and upon hatching, the young larvae immediately bore into the plant tissue, where they spend the winter.
Signs of infestation include wilting leaves, stunted branch growth, and the eventual death of affected stems. Internally, the branches exhibit characteristic galleries filled with frass. If left unchecked, a severe infestation can result in the rapid decline of the entire shrub, necessitating rigorous maintenance to prevent total crop loss.
Control strategies should focus on a combination of cultural and chemical interventions. The most critical practice is the early identification and pruning of infested wood, which must be cut low and destroyed to eliminate larvae. Insecticide applications are most effective when timed precisely with the moth flight period, often assisted by the use of pheromone traps for monitoring.
- Pruning and destruction of infested branches
- Use of pheromone traps for population tracking
- Application of selective insecticides during moth flight
- Maintaining vigorous plant health through proper fertilization
