Description
The Grey beet weevil (Tanymecus dilaticollis) is a prominent agricultural pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is widely recognized as a serious threat to spring-sown crops in regions with continental climates, particularly in Eastern and Southeastern Europe.
This pest is highly polyphagous, causing significant damage to sugar beets, maize, sunflowers, and legumes. The adult weevils are particularly destructive to young, tender plants during their initial growth stages, often feeding on the cotyledons and early true leaves soon after emergence.
The life cycle of the pest is typically biennial. The weevils overwinter deep in the soil profile and emerge in the spring when soil temperatures rise to suitable levels. While the larval stage develops underground and feeds on plant roots, the adult beetles are the primary cause of economic damage due to their voracious feeding habit on seedlings.
The damage caused by Tanymecus dilaticollis is easily identified by the scalloped edges of leaves or total destruction of the plant stem. In high-infestation years, the weevil can clear vast areas of crops within a few days. This rapid destruction often necessitates reseeding, leading to significant financial losses for farmers and poor stand establishment.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, spatial isolation from previous beet or maize fields, and early seeding dates are vital. Seed treatments with systemic insecticides are currently the gold standard for protecting emerging seedlings.
