Hairy weevil

Systematic position. The hairy weevil (Tanymecus hispidus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in Eurasia, known for its ability to devastate seedling crops during the early stages of their growth cycle.

Host crops. This species is highly polyphagous, attacking a wide variety of crops including winter and spring cereals, maize, sunflower, and sugar beet. It poses a particular threat to field crops in areas with continental climates, where synchronization between the emergence of the pest and the germination of the crop can lead to severe losses.

Biology and life cycle. Adults overwinter deep in the soil profile. As temperatures rise in early spring, they emerge to the surface. Their activity is largely temperature-dependent; they prefer mild, sunny days for feeding and mating. Eggs are deposited in the soil, and while larvae feed on roots, the adult stage is responsible for the most acute damage to crops.

Damage character and economic importance. Adults feed on the leaf margins of young plants, often devouring leaves down to the midrib. In severe infestations, the complete destruction of seedling stands is common, forcing farmers to replant affected areas. The pest's ability to remain hidden in the soil and its rapid feeding rate make it a difficult threat to monitor during the early season.

Protection measures. Effective control relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Cultural methods, such as timely deep tillage, help disrupt the pest's overwintering sites. Chemical control involves the use of systemic seed dressings, which are essential for protecting seedlings from early-season feeding. Foliar insecticide applications may be necessary if threshold levels are exceeded during the early development stages.
