Description

The genus Tanytarsus belongs to the family Chironomidae (non-biting midges) within the order Diptera. While most chironomids are ecologically significant, certain species of Tanytarsus are recognized as agricultural pests, particularly in hydroponic systems and water-saturated cropping environments like rice paddies.

The primary crop affected by Tanytarsus larvae is rice. In these aquatic habitats, the larvae reside within the substrate or sediment. When their population density reaches critical levels, they feed on germinating seeds and the roots of young rice seedlings, significantly reducing plant density.

The biological development of this midge is entirely dependent on aquatic conditions. The female lays eggs in water, and the larvae develop through several instars. The duration of this cycle is highly sensitive to water temperature, which allows for multiple rapid generations within a single growing season.

The damage caused by Tanytarsus is often underestimated until visible patches of missing plants appear in the field. By grazing on the tender roots and basal tissues of the seedlings, the larvae cause the plants to detach from the soil and die, which directly leads to yield loss.

Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for controlling these midges include:

  • Water management, such as controlled drainage, to disrupt the larval environment.
  • Application of specialized water-compatible insecticides when threshold populations are exceeded.
  • Optimizing seeding rates to compensate for minor seedling loss.
  • Regular field scouting during the early germination stage to monitor larval activity.
