Beet stem weevil

The beet stem weevil (Temnorhinus mendicus) is a coleopteran pest belonging to the Curculionidae family. It is a specialized pest that primarily targets members of the Amaranthaceae family, including sugar beet, red beet, and fodder beet. The species is predominantly found in warm, arid climates, posing a threat to beet production.

Regarding its biology, Temnorhinus mendicus overwinters as an adult in the soil or under debris. In the spring, they emerge and migrate to young beet plants to feed on the foliage. Females subsequently deposit eggs inside the petioles or stems of the host plants, ensuring that the emerging larvae have immediate access to food sources.

Damage is caused both by adults and larvae. Adults create small notches on the leaves, which is generally not lethal but weakens the plant. However, the larvae are the most destructive stage; they tunnel inside the petioles and stems, disrupting the vascular system and often causing the leaves to wilt or the entire plant to become deformed and stunted.

The economic impact of the beet stem weevil is significant in infested regions, especially during years with low rainfall when plants are already under water stress. Heavy infestations can lead to substantial biomass losses, reduced sugar content in root crops, and an overall decrease in the market value of the harvest due to compromised plant development.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this weevil effectively. Key strategies include:

• Crop rotation to reduce the overwintering population density in the field.
• Elimination of wild Chenopodiaceae weeds, which act as alternative hosts for the pest.
• Deep autumn plowing to disrupt the hibernation sites of the adults.
• Application of chemical insecticides during the peak activity of adult weevils if economic injury levels are exceeded.
