Description

Systematic position: Mites of the genus Tenuipalpus belong to the order Trombidiformes and the family Tenuipalpidae. Often referred to as false spider mites or flat mites, these pests are characterized by their dorsoventrally flattened bodies and, unlike members of the Tetranychidae family, they do not produce silken webs, making them harder to detect.

Host plants: Tenuipalpus species have a broad host range, causing significant damage to various crops worldwide. Key hosts include citrus trees, grapevines, tea plantations, and an array of ornamental species like orchids and palms. They are particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where year-round production occurs.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Development is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with warmer temperatures accelerating the population growth. Females typically deposit their eggs in sheltered areas of the plant, such as the undersides of leaves, leaf axils, or cracks in the bark.

Damage and economic impact: These mites are piercing-sucking insects. By feeding on the plant's internal fluids, they cause chlorotic spotting and stunted growth. Severe infestations lead to leaf necrosis, deformation, and defoliation, which severely impacts the overall health, photosynthetic capacity, and commercial value of the affected crops.
