Cactus flat mite

Systematic position. The cactus flat mite (Tenuipalpus cactorum) belongs to the family Tenuipalpidae within the order Trombidiformes. These mites are microscopic and are notorious for causing significant aesthetic and physiological damage to succulent plants, often remaining hidden in the crevices of the plant's stem.

Affected crops. The pest specifically targets various species of the Cactaceae family. It is a common problem in greenhouses, nurseries, and private collections where cacti are grown. It can significantly weaken plants, especially those that are already stressed due to improper cultivation conditions.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Development is heavily influenced by temperature, with warmer conditions significantly accelerating the maturation process. Mites are generally found in clusters, moving very slowly, which makes them difficult to spot during initial inspections.

Damage and harmfulness. Feeding by the cactus flat mite causes characteristic discoloration, typically appearing as light, chlorotic spots that eventually turn into brown, necrotic, or corky lesions. This damage is permanent, as the mite destroys the epidermis, leading to a loss of vigor and stunted growth of the cactus plant.

Protection measures. Managing Tenuipalpus cactorum requires a combination of vigilance and chemical treatment:

• Strict quarantine for all new succulent plants introduced to a collection.
• Routine inspections using a magnifying glass to identify early signs of infestation.
• Application of specialized acaricides labeled for mite control.
• Maintaining optimal ventilation and avoiding excessively dry environments where mites thrive.
• Performing multiple treatments with different chemical classes to prevent the development of resistance.
