False spider mite

Systematic position. Tenuipalpus caudatus belongs to the family Tenuipalpidae (false spider mites) within the order Trombidiformes. These mites are distinct from true spider mites because they do not spin webs, yet they are notorious for causing significant physiological stress to their host plants through intensive sap-feeding.

Host crops. This species acts as a pest to a wide range of horticultural and ornamental plants. It commonly infests pome and stone fruit trees, including apples, pears, and plums, as well as grapevines. The mites are typically found on the underside of leaves, often congregating near the midrib or along leaf veins to feed on plant juices.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The mites overwinter as mated females in protected areas such as tree bark crevices or dormant buds. As temperatures rise in the spring, the females emerge to lay eggs on the newly developing foliage. Development is temperature-dependent, with multiple generations overlapping during the summer.

Damage and economic importance. Feeding by Tenuipalpus caudatus causes localized chlorosis, stippling, and eventual necrosis of the leaf tissue. Persistent feeding leads to leaf curling, stunted growth, and premature senescence. The economic damage includes reduced fruit set, lower quality of fruit, and increased susceptibility of the trees to environmental stresses or secondary infections.
