Description
Systematic position. The species belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, class Arachnida, order Acariformes, and the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly known as flat mites. These organisms are highly specialized parasites of plants, often going unnoticed due to their extremely small size and cryptic habits on the leaf surface.
Crops affected. The primary host for Tenuipalpus heveae is the Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Because this crop is the main source of commercial natural rubber, the presence of this mite on plantations is a significant concern for the rubber production industry worldwide.
Biology and development. The life cycle of the Hevea flat mite comprises egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. The rate of development is highly dependent on ambient temperature and relative humidity. High-density populations typically emerge during periods of dry weather, which favors the reproduction cycles of the mite on the underside of leaves.
Damage and pest status. Infestations typically result in leaf chlorosis, curling, and premature leaf senescence. By feeding on the leaf cells, Tenuipalpus heveae disrupts the plant's photosynthetic capacity. When damage is widespread, the physiological stress significantly reduces the latex yield, causing direct economic losses to plantation owners.
