Phalaenopsis mite

Systematic position: Tenuipalpus pacificus belongs to the family Tenuipalpidae, commonly known as flat mites or false spider mites. These mites are distinct from the well-known spider mites (Tetranychidae) because they do not spin silk webs and are generally more cryptic in their behavior and physical placement on host plants.

Host plants: The primary host of Tenuipalpus pacificus is the genus Phalaenopsis, although it can also infest other orchid species and various tropical ornamental plants. Due to its specialization, it is a significant economic pest in commercial orchid greenhouses and botanical collections.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle follows a typical mite progression: egg, larva, two nymphal stages, and adult. The entire cycle is temperature-dependent and can be completed within two to three weeks under warm greenhouse conditions. Because they reproduce continuously in indoor environments, populations can explode rapidly if not detected during early stages.

Damage symptoms and harmfulness: The mite feeds by piercing the plant tissues and extracting cell contents, which leads to localized chlorosis and silvering of the leaf surface. As the damage progresses, the affected areas become necrotic and turn brown, leading to stunted plant growth and a significant reduction in overall plant vigor and market value.

Control measures: Successful management requires a combination of early detection and systematic chemical control. Since these mites often hide deep in leaf axils, thorough application of acaricides is essential.
