Common pine shoot beetle

Systematic position. The common pine shoot beetle (Tomicus piniperda) belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae, subfamily Scolytinae. It is widely recognized as a serious pest of pine forests across Europe and other temperate regions, known for its dual-stage life cycle that causes significant physiological stress to trees.

Host plants and damage. The primary host is the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), although it also infests other pine species, spruce, and larch. The beetle inflicts damage in two distinct ways: larvae feed on the cambium beneath the bark, which can girdle and kill the tree, while adult beetles tunnel into the pith of young, healthy shoots, causing them to break off and fall to the ground.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves overwintering as adults in the bark at the base of the tree or in leaf litter. In early spring, beetles migrate to weakened or felled timber to lay eggs. Females construct a vertical egg gallery in the phloem where they deposit eggs. The larvae then bore horizontal galleries, eventually pupating under the bark before emerging as adults.

Economic impact. The economic losses caused by Tomicus piniperda are significant. Infested trees may die due to larval activity, while shoot feeding stunts growth and reduces timber quality. Massive infestations in drought-stressed stands often lead to total forest degradation, making integrated management essential for sustainable forestry.

Management practices. Control strategies focus on silvicultural measures to minimize the population density:

• Prompt removal of infested, storm-damaged, or felled trees before the new generation emerges.
• Sanitation logging to remove brood material during the dormant season.
• Use of trap logs deployed in spring to attract and eliminate breeding adults.
• Installation of pheromone-based monitoring systems to track population shifts.
• Encouragement of natural biological control agents, such as woodpeckers and predatory insects.
