Description
The genus Tortrix belongs to the family Tortricidae, a large group within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are widely known for their larvae, commonly referred to as leafrollers. The adults are relatively small moths that exhibit a distinct bell-shaped wing profile when resting, which is a key identifying feature for this family.
These pests primarily target a variety of woody plants. In agricultural and forest settings, they cause severe damage to fruit trees such as apples, pears, plums, and cherries, as well as deciduous trees like oaks. The wide range of host plants makes them a constant threat to orchard health throughout the spring and summer months.
The biological development of the Tortrix moth includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Overwintering typically occurs as eggs laid on tree bark or as larvae hidden in crevices. Once the temperatures rise in spring, the larvae emerge and begin feeding on buds, eventually rolling leaves into tubes using silk webs, which provides them with shelter and food.
The damage caused is twofold: it reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plant due to foliage consumption and directly destroys reproductive structures. Larvae often bore into fruit, causing significant surface scarring and internal rot. This damage not only ruins the marketability of the crop but also weakens the overall vigor of the host plant.
Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management (IPM). Cultural practices include removing infested leaf clusters and using pheromone traps to monitor adult populations. During high infestation levels, timely application of biological agents or selective insecticides is recommended to minimize damage while protecting beneficial insect populations in the orchard.
