Trophurus is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Telotylenchidae. These microscopic roundworms are obligate parasites that typically inhabit the soil surrounding plant roots. Equipped with a sharp stylet, they puncture root cells to feed on the cytoplasm, effectively depriving the plant of essential nutrients and disrupting its physiological processes.
The host range of Trophurus is relatively diverse, impacting various agricultural and horticultural crops. Major economic losses have been observed in cereal crops, grasses, and several vegetable species. The presence of these nematodes is particularly problematic in intensive farming systems where continuous cropping allows nematode populations to reach levels that cause significant economic damage.
The life cycle of Trophurus includes several larval stages separated by molts. These nematodes are highly adapted to soil environments and can survive periods of environmental stress. Reproduction is sexual, and the population density is heavily influenced by the availability of suitable host roots.
