Tylenchorhynchus

Tylenchorhynchus is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Belonolaimidae. These microscopic worms are typical ectoparasites that inhabit the soil and feed on plant root cells. Unlike endoparasitic nematodes, they do not penetrate deep into the root tissues, but their feeding activity significantly impacts the physiological processes of the plant.

The range of host crops is vast. This pest can cause substantial damage to cereal crops, corn, potatoes, sugar beets, and various vegetable and berry crops. The economic damage is most severe in sandy soils, where the loose structure allows for easy movement and rapid population growth of the nematodes.

The biology and lifecycle of Tylenchorhynchus are closely linked to soil moisture and temperature. The nematodes undergo several larval stages, each followed by molting. Reproduction occurs within the soil environment, where these pests exhibit resilience, capable of surviving adverse conditions by entering a state of reduced metabolism when host plants are unavailable.

The damage manifests as stunted root systems: nematodes suck nutrients from root hairs and young root tips. Consequently, the tips of the roots often darken, twist, or decay. This leads to reduced vigor of the plant above ground, yellowing of leaves, decreased tillering, and substantial yield losses, particularly under drought stress conditions.

Protection measures require an integrated approach, as chemical eradication of soil-borne nematodes is difficult. Key management strategies include:

• Crop rotation using non-host plant species to break the nematode lifecycle.
• Thorough weeding to eliminate potential reservoir plants that host the nematodes.
• Incorporation of organic amendments to improve soil structure and enhance plant tolerance.
• Use of certified pathogen-free planting material.
• Application of specialized nematicides in hotspots where population density exceeds economic damage thresholds.
