Description

Tylenchorhynchus agri is a plant-parasitic nematode belonging to the order Tylenchida and the family Dolichodoridae. These nematodes are known as stunt nematodes because their feeding activity on root systems often results in significant growth retardation of the host plants, affecting both the root architecture and the overall crop vigor.

The primary host range includes various graminaceous plants, such as wheat, barley, and maize. They are widely distributed in agricultural soils, especially in fields with monoculture practices where the population density can increase significantly over several seasons, leading to substantial yield losses across large areas.

The life cycle of this pest involves several stages: egg, four juvenile stages, and the adult stage. The nematodes typically remain in the soil, actively searching for young roots to feed upon. Development is highly dependent on temperature and soil moisture levels, with optimal activity often occurring during the moderate temperatures of the spring and autumn seasons.

Symptoms of infestation are usually uniform throughout a field, appearing as patches of stunted, chlorotic plants that fail to thrive despite adequate fertilization and irrigation. The direct damage consists of cellular destruction in the root cortex, which prevents the uptake of water and essential nutrients, ultimately leading to weakened plants susceptible to drought stress.
