Description

Tylenchorhynchus mashhoodi is a species of plant-parasitic nematode classified within the order Tylenchida and the family Belonolaimidae. As an ectoparasite, it lives in the soil and feeds on the outer layers of plant roots, significantly impacting nutrient uptake.

This pest affects a wide range of host plants, including major agronomic crops like rice, wheat, corn, and various leguminous species. It is widely recognized for its ability to thrive in diverse soil conditions, provided that a suitable host plant is present for feeding and reproduction.

The life cycle of the nematode involves an egg stage, four larval stages, and a sexually mature adult. The entire life cycle occurs in the rhizosphere, where the nematodes utilize root exudates to locate host roots. Under adverse environmental conditions, the population density can fluctuate significantly.

Damage caused by Tylenchorhynchus mashhoodi manifests as stunted root systems, yellowing of foliage, and reduced plant vigor. In severe infestations, the root system fails to develop properly, which limits water and mineral absorption, ultimately leading to significant yield losses in commercial farming.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling this nematode. Recommended strategies include the use of non-host rotational crops to starve the population, the incorporation of organic matter to improve soil health, and, when necessary, the application of chemical nematicides following soil testing and density analysis.
