Xiphinema

Xiphinema is a genus of plant-parasitic nematodes belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Longidoridae. Commonly known as dagger nematodes, these microscopic soil organisms are recognized as significant agricultural pests that cause direct damage to root systems and serve as efficient vectors for several nepoviruses.

The host range of Xiphinema includes various economically important crops such as grapevines, fruit trees, berry bushes, and certain ornamental plants. By feeding on root tips, these nematodes cause necrosis, root stunting, and the formation of galls, which disrupts the plant's ability to uptake water and essential nutrients effectively.

The biology of Xiphinema is characterized by a slow reproductive rate and a complex lifecycle that takes place entirely in the soil. They are ectoparasites, using their long, needle-like stylet to penetrate root cells. Despite their slow reproduction, their longevity and ability to survive long periods without a host make them extremely difficult to eradicate once established.

The most severe impact of Xiphinema infestations is the transmission of plant viruses. As they feed on infected roots and move to healthy ones, they transmit viruses into the plant's vascular system. This transmission leads to severe diseases that often result in stunted growth, reduced fruit quality, and the eventual decline or death of the affected plant.
